We're hiring a Venture Associate!

We're hiring our first Venture Associate and are looking for someone amazing. Let us know if it might be you. See the job description below and email us at contact@blue.xyz if you're interested

Blue {Seed} Collective is a people-first, early stage venture investment firm located in New York City. Our investment thesis is simple: we believe phenomenal people build phenomenal businesses. This means our mission is to identify, invest in, and develop exceptional entrepreneurs across industry and geography. We invest most heavily in the US, in tech businesses, and in founders who have premium professional backgrounds (most often alumni of McKinsey, Bain, BCG, and Goldman).

We are a ‘start-up’ VC with the energy, aspiration, and funding to build a different type of investment platform. We are currently deploying our first Fund and have built an initial portfolio of 20+ exciting, diverse companies (see www.blue.xyz/entrepreneurs). We are convinced of the value of diversity of perspective in our portfolio, our LP base, and our team and want to build a world-class and inclusive institution.

Today we are two co-Founder Partners in search of a distinctively talented individual to join as the first team member.

The Venture Associate will lead and support activities across the full spectrum of Blue {Seed} Collective operations, from sourcing to diligence to portfolio support to investor engagement and brand building. You will work side-by-side with Blue Collective’s Partners and receive active coaching and mentorship. You will play an integral role in helping us create Blue Collective’s long-term strategy and build a premier investment business.

We anticipate this role to be an accelerated track to Partner. As such, we are looking for someone not afraid to put everything on the line and help us build something special and long-lasting. This is a role that promises long hours and little pay (at least in the near-term) in return for:

  • World-class coaching;
  • The experience of building a business (and businesses);
  • Exposure across wide-ranging industries, technologies, and people that is rarely matched;
  • A real career path in venture capital; and
  • The prospects of fabulous riches in the future!

  • Develop and cultivate long-lasting relationships with entrepreneurs and companies that fit our investment scope
  • Lead industry research into sectors and businesses that fit our investment scope
  • Drive diligence activities (e.g., founder interviews, market and competitive analysis, customer interviews, etc.) and support investment decision-making
  • Support portfolio entrepreneurs with the best of Blue Collective (e.g., problem-solving, introductions, hiring support, hands-on support, analysis, etc.)
  • Support brand-building activities (including content creation and events)
  • Drive special projects related to Blue Collective’s longer-term growth and strategy
  • Support fundraising activities for future Blue Collective Funds
  • Help craft the overall strategy and direction for the Firm

  • A leader, entrepreneur, and ‘self-starter’ – this is a ‘start-up’ and demands the requisite level of dedication and sacrifice
  • Energized by new ideas – a generalist at heart who can also go deep and become an expert in any topic in less than a day
  • Energized by new people – loves meeting new people and developing long-lasting, trust-based relationships
  • Operator mindset – knows how businesses get big and how they make money
  • Razor-sharp analytical skills – comfortable and adept with fact-gathering, analysis, and insight generation
  • Killer communication skills – able to influence people and express ideas clearly and succinctly
  • Values-driven – knows what it means to operate as a principled professional
  • Ideally 2+ years as Analyst or Associate at top management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG)
  • BA degree required; MBA and/or grad degree valued, but not required (see above for what’s really important)
  • PE / VC experience discouraged ;-)

  • Annual salary starting at $70K USD with annual performance bonus
  • Associate will also receive equity at the start (i.e., a portion of GP “carry”)

To apply, please email us at contact@blue.xyz. Please send us a cover letter and a resume. Next step would involve in-person interviews with Blue Collective Partners. We look forward to meeting you.

SoapBox creating Champions in Monrovia

David Simnick and the SoapBox team make great soap and wash products. That's how they make money as a business and for themselves and the SoapBox investors (of which we are proud to be a part). SoapBox also has a social mission. Every sale of a SoapBox product here generates a donation of soap and clean water to those who need it. As the team says, "Soap = Hope". As part of their social mission, SoapBox is working in Monrovia to train female Ebola survivors in making soap. These "Champions", once trained, will then have means and abilities to make money for themselves and deliver better hygiene to those around them. We love businesses with social missions and are proud to support SoapBox in small part. Congrats David and team!

Bee raises $4.6 million to bring banking back to the masses

Did you know that more than 70 million US citizens do not have access to the traditional banking system (i.e., basic checking, savings, credit that you probably take for granted)? Did you know that more than 90% of bank branch closures since the GFC have occurred in communities with incomes at or below the US median? Whether you knew this previously or not, we hope you agree it's a big problem.

Vinay, Alex, and Max are tackling this problem with Bee, a digital-only banking product for the un-banked and under-banked in the US. They've just recently raised a new financing round led by AXA Capital. We're happy to be along for the ride. Congratulations to the team at Bee!

Making payments harder, better, faster, stronger...

Well actually, Kash's mission is to make "payments better, faster, and safer", but our paraphrase is close enough. Kaz Nejatian, one of the Blue {Seed} entrepreneurs and the founder of Kash, has launched the Kash API, d.b.a. liveACH API. Kash payments are an alternative to credit cards and run over ACH rails (think checks) as opposed to credit or debit rails (think Visa and MasterCard). Merchants care because Kash is way cheaper for them than credit or debit and now just as safe. For those who aren't payment 'wonks' like us, we can assure you this is 'harder, better, faster, stronger....' Learn more at PYMNTS

SketchDeck tells us what a successful pitch deck looks like

What SketchDeck learned from designing 200 pitch decks

Since the beginning of SketchDeck clients have asked us to design their fundraising pitch decks. We've now worked with over 200 companies to help them impress investors and raise capital for their businesses.

We've learned a lot about how to make a good pitch deck: how to impress investors, how to showcase your story and how to be compelling. We've analysed the pitches we've worked on and here share some of the results.

Successful pitches' first slide is often their value proposition or the problem they are solving

LookBooker books the Sassoons as partners

LookBooker Welcomes the Sassoons

Eden and Elan Sassoon, children of the late and iconic hair genius Vidal Sassoon, have joined LookBooker in a unique partnership that represents the intersection between the legacy of hair and beauty and what the future might hold. LookBooker is currently the premier aggregator for hair and beauty services in New York City, and The Sassoons will be partnering with us as we grow and expand across the US. As salon owners and busy parents themselves, the benefits of LookBooker – a quick and easy way to search for, select and instantly confirm appointments – appealed to the pair, both as heavy users of the platform and as owners of salons across the country.
